In the unusual circumstance of celebrating All Souls' Day on a Sunday, we consider the nature of purgatory but especially focus on how to avoid becoming a poor forgotten soul in purgatory.
How not to become a forgotten soul in purgatory:
1) Believe in purgatory (be a Catholic).
2) Surround yourself with family and friends who believe in purgatory and will pray for you. Join a Catholic parish where the people pray for those who have died.
3) Ask for prayers and Masses to be offered in your behalf after you die. Let your funeral be a true Catholic funeral that reminds people to pray for you (not just a celebration of life). Set aside some of your own funds for Masses to be said for you.
4) Have devotion to Mary: The Brown Scapular, the Rosary, the First Saturdays. Also, have a devotion to the souls in purgatory and pray for them yourself during your life.
5) Finally, remember that we do not have to go to purgatory - we can just be saints, and go straight to heaven. Purgatory is not necessary, if only we are willing to follow God perfectly in this life.
