The mercy of Jesus (as shown to Mary Magdalene and to the good thief) gives us hope as we contemplate the day of judgement.
The Dies Irae is not intended to make is fear, but rather to trust in the Lord's mercy. At the final judgment, we will proclaim God's mercy in a way that even the angels will not be able to - for we have received the forgiveness of our sins.
