The Third Sunday of Lent is Scrutiny Sunday, traditionally the scrutinies began on this Sunday (even though, in the early Church, the remaining six scrutinies would be on weekdays).
We look at the history of the scrutinies in the early Church, and how they have been adapted since the Second Vatican Council. We also consider what the story of the woman at the well teaches us about Lent and conversion, and especially how it is meant to inspire the catechumens.
Finally, we note that the woman at the well is St Photina whose feast day is March 20th!
